Why Video Content Isn’t Optional Anymore – Especially with Social Media Marketing

Let’s be honest: social media has changed.

A few years ago, you could chuck up a nice photo, add a few hashtags, and get a decent amount of likes. Maybe even a few enquiries.

Now? Not so much.

If you’re not using video content, your reach is probably sinking faster than a TikTok trend after a week. It’s brutal, but it’s true – video is no longer a “nice-to-have” when it comes to social media marketing.

It’s the main event.

Here’s why video should already be in your content mix and why waiting until “next quarter” is probably costing you attention, engagement and potential leads.

Video stops the scroll. Static doesn’t.

We’re all guilty of it!

Scrolling aimlessly through our phones without even noticing what we’re looking at. A static image? It’s lucky to get half a second of our attention.

But video? That moves. It makes people pause. And if it’s even slightly interesting, they’ll hang around for three, maybe even 10 seconds (which is an eternity in internet time).

Whether it’s a chef plating food, someone talking to camera or a timelapse of a new project, video gives you a better chance of actually being seen.

And that’s kind of the point, right?

Social media platforms want you to post video

Let’s not pretend this is optional.

Instagram Reels. Facebook videos. TikTok. LinkedIn video posts. Even YouTube’s joined in with Shorts.

These platforms are built to push video. Their algorithms reward it. And the creators who play the game are the ones getting reach while everyone else watches their engagement tank and wonders what went wrong.

If you’re still only posting graphics or the odd quote image, you’re basically making it harder for yourself.

Video doesn’t need to be Hollywood-level

Here’s where people panic.

…“We don’t have the budget.”

…“We don’t want to be on camera.”

…“We don’t know where to start.”

Newsflash: some of the best content we’ve made has been shot on my iPhone Pro Max in natural light with zero crew and about five minutes of prep.

What matters is what you’re showing and whether it feels real.

Show behind the scenes. Introduce your team. Show your product being used. Talk about something people ask you all the time. That’s it.

Authentic > Perfect. Every single time.

You can get loads of mileage out of one video

Let’s say you film a 60-second video. You can post it on:

Instagram Reels; Facebook Reels; TikTok ;LinkedIn; Your website; Your Google Business profile; Your email newsletter

And maybe even in a blog post like this one

One video can go a long way if you plan it properly and that makes it one of the most cost-effective types of content you can create.

People trust what they can see

We all know the old saying: “People buy from people.” Well, people buy from people they can relate to. And video helps with that.

There’s something about hearing someone speak, seeing their body languag or watching a process in real time that builds trust.

It’s not polished. It’s not over-edited. It’s just honest and that makes it effective.

TL;DR? (Too Long; Didn’t Reel)

If you’re a business trying to build awareness, trust or just be seen in a noisy online world then video content needs to be part of your marketing.

Not next year.

Not when you’ve “got more time.”

Now.

Whether it’s social media clips, product shots, testimonials or behind-the-scenes footage – video works. It tells your story better. It’s more engaging and it’s what your customers are watching.

Need help getting started? That’s literally what we do.

At Cakeshop Media, we help Kent businesses (and beyond) create video content that actually gets watched and gets results.

We plan it, film it, edit it and even help you figure out what to say if you’re not sure where to start.

You just show up and we’ll handle the rest.

Why not get in touch? Especially if your feed’s feeling a bit flat lately.
